A violent attack in northern France has resulted in one death and five injuries, including a 12-year-old girl who remains in critical condition. Authorities have formally categorized the incident, which occurred on Friday around 10:30 am local time, as a racially motivated terrorist act. The perpetrator, a 39-year-old man identified as Kevin T., carried out a 15-minute rampage across the working-class towns of Trappes and La Verriere, located on the outskirts of Paris. A gunman drove through the towns of Trappes and La Verriere, a working class area on the outskirts of Paris with a large immigrant and Muslim population, and fired an automatic weapon randomly at a petrol station, a medical centre and a children’s playground, about 10:30am (08:30 GMT) on Friday. It was tabled by the centre-right European People’s Party and passed in a 381-167 vote with 15 abstentions. The Council on American-Islamic Relations released a report on Friday condemning the attacks in France.

Witnesses and officials described a harrowing scene as the gunman fired an automatic weapon indiscriminately at a petrol station, a medical facility, and a children’s playground.

Local parliamentarian Laurent Mazaury reported that the suspect confessed to police that his intent was to kill foreigners, leading investigators to conclude that the motive was clearly rooted in racial animosity.

Among the victims, 24-year-old Pengo Bassio Wangi was killed, while a woman and a 12-year-old girl, both wearing headscarves, were among the wounded.

The girl’s mother stated that her daughter sustained eight gunshot wounds and underwent emergency surgery. She questioned whether her daughter had been targeted because she was wearing a headscarf.

President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation on X, characterizing the shooting as a terrorist and racist attack that marks a pivotal moment for the Republic. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed that while the investigation is ongoing, the classification of the crime as terrorism is definitive. Prosecutors are currently probing potential ties between the shooter and broader extremist groups, while also holding a member of the suspect’s immediate family in custody as part of the inquiry. Police discovered an older-style World War II-era semiautomatic weapon and tear gas grenades inside the suspect’s vehicle. He added: “I think we are facing a racist person.”. According to writing on X, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu, The case was “very serious” and “all resources of the security forces and the judiciary are fully mobilised”.

The incident has heightened existing tensions in France, where the government is managing widespread and often violent protests regarding the cost of living. As authorities prepare to deploy 70,000 police officers to address ongoing demonstrations, the shooting has reignited a fierce political discourse regarding immigration and xenophobia. While Marine Le Pen of the far-right National Rally condemned the attack as barbaric, Muslim organizations have criticized the party for fostering a hostile climate through inflammatory anti-Muslim rhetoric.

Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh, who is of Moroccan descent, expressed his outrage, stating that the victims were targeted specifically for their identity and likely their religious attire. Rabeh and other community leaders have called out political figures who they believe weaponize negative sentiments against Muslims, thereby encouraging such violence. The French Muslim Council echoed these concerns, asserting that those promoting hate speech share responsibility for the violence. According to the mayor of Trappes, Ali Rabeh,, The suspect was “firing at random” and wanted to cause a “bloodbath” in the communities, calling it “objectively a racist attack, probably Islamophobic”. According to “Tonight, I have reiterated the Nation’s support for all the victims and their families,” he, On X. “I have also reaffirmed our absolute determination to continue the fight against racism, in all its forms.”. According to mayor Rabeh, who has Moroccan roots,, The people targeted “could just as easily have been my mother, my brothers or my sisters-in-law”. The girl’s mother told French broadcaster RTL: “How could anyone do this to a child?”. Most recently, Le Pen, who is campaigning for the French presidency, has proposed that women who wear the headscarf in public spaces should be fined. He denounced lawmakers who have made negative comments about Muslims as “criminals” who “ideologically weaponise those who are capable of committing crimes”.

This attack occurs against a backdrop of increasing international reports of rising Islamophobia.

The European Union’s Fundamental Rights Agency has noted that one in two Muslims in Europe faces racial discrimination, particularly in employment and housing sectors.

Similar trends are visible in the United Kingdom, where Amnesty International documented Islamophobic violence reaching emergency levels, including firebombings and physical assaults. Data from the monitoring group Tell MAMA indicated 1,909 anti-Muslim incidents in the UK last year, a 5 percent increase, though advocates believe the actual numbers are significantly higher. According to in the UK, the monitoring group Tell MAMA, 1,909 anti-Muslim cases last year, a 5 percent rise on the previous year, but said the true figure is likely to be much higher because many people don’t come forward.

Meanwhile, the European Parliament recently passed a resolution focusing on countering Islamist influence, a move some researchers like Farid Hafez of Georgetown University argue signals a dangerous shift as center-right factions align more closely with far-right anti-Muslim platforms.
