US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has touched down in Reykjavik, Iceland, marking the start of a four-day diplomatic tour across Europe that will also include stops in Greece and Portugal. Discussions during his visit to Iceland are set to focus heavily on fostering economic and security collaboration, as outlined by Department of State officials.

Addressing the recent withdrawal of B-1 bombers from the UK’s Fairford airbase, Rubio stated that he would not draw a direct line between that strategic move and the security incident that occurred last week. While he emphasized that the Department of War frequently reallocates military resources based on operational needs, he expressed full confidence in the safety of US installations and credited UK authorities for their ongoing cooperation. He told reporters he would not directly tie the US decision to remove its B-1 bombers from Britain’s Fairford airbase to last week’s incident, ahead of his departure.

The relocation of the bombers, which were previously deployed for strikes against Iranian targets, followed arrests connected to potential security threats. Five British citizens were taken into custody near the Fairford site on suspicion of planning terrorist activities, and a sixth suspect—a dual UK-Iranian national—was later apprehended in London; all six individuals have since been released on bail.

President Donald Trump confirmed that the aircraft were moved due to specific intelligence regarding threats, noting that the decision was a proactive step to avoid unnecessary exposure to the enemy. Despite Tehran denying any formal involvement in the events at the British base, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had previously designated Fairford as a valid military objective. A NATO official remarked that Iran is still viewed as posing an acute threat to US interests stationed within the United Kingdom. “There were some threats, and rather than tempting the enemy, we’ll capture the enemy and beat the enemy.

As his trip continues, Rubio will travel to Athens to lead the American delegation at the sixth US-Greece Strategic Dialogue, where topics will include regional energy stability and defense cooperation. He is scheduled to conclude his mission in Lisbon to discuss further technological, economic, and defense partnerships.
