US President Donald Trump has officially declared an ‘energy ceasefire’ between Russia and Ukraine, aiming to de-escalate mutual strikes on energy infrastructure that have strained global markets. In a social media post, Trump stated that the agreement was effective immediately and warned both parties against violating the terms. Despite the announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the development was unexpected, though he indicated that his administration is prepared to support the truce pending further clarification from Washington. According to ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denied any knowledge of the agreement and, It was “news to him,” according to Axios. Saying in a post on Telegram: “Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and it is important that Russia support it as well, but he confirmed Ukraine would back the deal.

The announcement follows a period of heightened tension. Zelenskyy has expressed readiness to halt Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries, provided Moscow reciprocates by ending attacks on Ukraine’s energy network. Previously, the Ukrainian leader suggested he would be willing to organize national elections if Russian President Vladimir Putin agrees to a comprehensive 60-day ceasefire.

Trump has taken a confrontational stance toward the Ukrainian leadership regarding recent military tactics. At the White House, the US President criticized the targeting of Russian oil facilities, telling reporters that Zelenskyy should stop such operations and suggesting it might be time for a change in Ukraine’s leadership. Zelenskyy countered that the selection of national leaders remains a domestic matter for the Ukrainian people, remarking that Putin also holds a desire to see a change in Kyiv’s administration. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Meanwhile, the situation on the ground remains volatile. On Saturday, a Russian strike on the city of Zaporizhzhia claimed the life of a six-year-old girl, among others, after part of an apartment complex was destroyed. Anatoliy Chumniy, the child’s grandfather, was present at the site of the recovery. Zelenskyy argued that Russia interpreted the recent US easing of sanctions on Russian diesel exports as a signal of weakness, leading to further bombardment of residential areas. “Last night provided yet more confirmation that Russia perceives any easing of pressure as a signal that it can supposedly keep fighting, that it can supposedly keep dropping bombs on cities.

Kyiv has continued to urge the US to focus on pressuring Moscow toward substantive negotiations aimed at resolving the four-and-a-half-year conflict. While Ukraine remains open to the energy ceasefire, officials in Kyiv are actively waiting for the American side to provide concrete details regarding the operational framework of the deal.
