CNN, Politico, and MS NOW have initiated legal action against the Trump administration following their exclusion from the White House. The lawsuit, filed Monday in the US District Court in Washington, seeks an immediate ruling to declare the ban unconstitutional and block the administration from enforcing it. The organizations argue that without notice or formal process, their credentials were revoked simply because the administration objected to their reporting.
President Donald Trump announced the ban last Friday, broadly accusing the media outlets of producing “fiction or lies” regarding his team. While he initially offered no specific examples, he later described the move as a reaction to “cumulative stories over the last few years.” Addressing the lawsuit on Truth Social, Trump labeled the outlets “Third Rate Clowns” and a “Crooked and Corrupt Press,” asserting that news organizations writing negatively or using anonymous sources should not have access to the White House.
In a joint statement, the plaintiffs declared they are pursuing litigation to uphold the principle that the government cannot dictate what the press reports. They warned that if left unchallenged, the administration’s actions threaten independent journalism and the public’s right to information. Legal experts note that the First Amendment, which protects freedom of the press, has historically been interpreted by courts to prevent the government from discriminating against media based on the content of their reports.
The standoff has severely impacted how presidential events are documented. On Monday morning, major US networks pulled out of the rotating White House pool, a system where media outlets share resources to cover presidential events. Fox News Washington bureau chief Bryan Boughton confirmed that the TV pool would no longer cover designated events involving the president, noting that the administration prevented CNN from fulfilling its duties for a presidential trip to New York. Consequently, no replacement pool has been established.
The impact of this boycott was visible at the White House, where CNN’s five-seat booth remained empty with screens powered off. CNN crews were instead forced to broadcast from a public sidewalk outside the secured grounds. Meanwhile, other networks—including ABC, CBS, Fox News, and NBC—issued a statement reaffirming that no administration should restrict a news organization simply for having a critical editorial stance. Several other outlets, such as The New York Times and The Washington Post, have also signaled they will not share still imagery from presidential events.
While the White House media slot remains largely vacant, the administration has pivoted toward its own digital presence, launching a streaming channel called “Trump TV.” During a trip to New York, the president met with Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who publicly invited members of the press to attend the event on the lawn. Despite this, Trump used the appearance to reiterate his hostility toward the media, suggesting he might target other outlets in the future, specifically naming The New York Times and The Washington Post as further examples of “fake news.”
This is not the first time the current administration has clashed with the press. In February, the White House assumed control over the press pool, previously managed for over a century by the White House Correspondents’ Association. That same month, Associated Press reporters and photographers were restricted from certain areas like the Oval Office and Air Force One after using the term “Gulf of Mexico” instead of “Gulf of America.” The AP has since filed its own ongoing lawsuit regarding these restrictions. Historically, other administrations have faced similar scrutiny, such as when the Obama administration attempted to exclude Fox News from a 2009 press pool interview, an effort that ultimately failed following widespread media pushback. The report also notes that the companies said their reporters were denied access to the building on Saturday. The report also notes that and who violate our National Security by writing false and defamatory stories with unknown ‘sources,’ shouldn’t be allowed access to the most important Office anywhere in the World,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, fake News people and publications that only write negatively. The report also notes that he added that “almost without question” his team will file an appeal. The report also notes that screens and monitors inside were turned off. The report also notes that those five networks are considered the only ones with the money and infrastructure to distribute live coverage from the White House and presidential events. The report also notes that and that is something that I believe in,” Mamdani said, i told the president that we’re going to have all of the members of the press here on the lawn. The report also notes that saying that journalists always say that they will boycott, but they “never boycott” him, trump continued his criticism of the media at the event. The report also notes that the US president added that there “may be others to join them”.
