Dario Amodei, the head of the artificial intelligence firm Anthropic, has publicly advocated for a more measured and closely monitored pace in the creation of advanced AI models. While Amodei clarified in a newly published essay that continuing to develop AI remains necessary, he stressed that the associated hazards are highly critical. He emphasized that global governments and tech organizations must be granted sufficient time to mitigate these emerging threats effectively.
Industry Leaders Align on Safety
This cautionary stance has found agreement among other prominent figures in the technology sector. Sam Altman, the chief executive of rival firm OpenAI, alongside billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, have both voiced their alignment with the Anthropic leader’s perspectives on managing AI’s trajectory.
Warnings of Human Extinction
The urgency of these safety concerns was echoed by Jacob Coxon, a researcher who resigned from Anthropic. Speaking with Laura Kuenssberg, Coxon revealed that industry professionals are deeply anxious about the immediate future of humanity, stating that “if we don’t slow down at the current rate of progress, there is a strong chance that we could all die in the immediate future.”
- Coxon asserted that those creating the systems are genuinely frightened about outcomes over the next two years.
- He highlighted that “it’s not at all an exaggeration to say that the people who are involved with both founding these companies and building the tech believe there is a possibility of human extinction,” noting many engineers estimate these catastrophic odds to be greater than ten percent.
