Professional football prospects Zxavian Harris and Dae’Quan Wright have been declared ineligible to play in the NFL for the remainder of the 2026 season. The league’s Player Personnel Department issued a formal notification to all front-office staff and head coaches on Wednesday, confirming that the defensive tackle and tight end cannot be signed, tried out, or hosted by any professional clubs for the duration of the campaign.
This ruling is the culmination of a volatile transition period for both athletes. After participating in NFL training camps this summer as undrafted free agents and subsequently being waived, the pair attempted a return to the collegiate ranks. They enrolled at Louisiana State University, supported by a temporary court order in Louisiana that allowed them to join the Tigers’ football program despite their previous professional involvement. Head coach Lane Kiffin initially left two roster spots open, signaling an intention to integrate them into the team.
However, their path to the field was blocked by a direct confrontation with the Southeastern Conference. The SEC enforced a strict regulation prohibiting former professional players from competing for its member schools, warning of severe consequences, including potential expulsion for LSU, if the players were activated. The tension dissipated only after LSU assigned those roster spots to other athletes, effectively ending the standoff and the players’ chances of participating at the university level. And Kiffin’s intent to put them on his active roster, started a massive showdown between the school and the Southeastern Conference, which had passed a rule banning former professional players from competing for member schools, the players’ presence with the team.
The league’s latest memo clarifies that because the players were eligible for the 2026 NFL Draft and later took part in college activities after the start of professional training camps, they fall under a policy that strips them of league eligibility for the year. This effectively leaves the two players in a professional limbo, unable to secure a roster spot in the NFL or return to play for their college team.
The current situation marks a definitive end to a confusing sequence of events that began with the players attempting to refine their standing through the college system after missing out on permanent NFL roles. With the SEC’s rules barring their collegiate involvement and the NFL closing its doors to them for the 2026 season, the immediate future for both Harris and Wright remains stalled as they are now ineligible for competition at either professional or collegiate levels. That move set in motion a chaotic sequence of events heading into the season’s second week.
