Driver Survives Fiery Crash Thanks to Fellow Racer’s Heroism

British racing driver Ollie Millroy, currently recovering in a Chinese hospital, has described his survival from a harrowing vehicle fire as a “miracle.” The 36-year-old was competing in the China GT Championship at the Shanghai International Circuit 11 days ago when his Ferrari was struck by two other vehicles. The impact sent his car into safety barriers, where it immediately ignited with him trapped inside.

Fellow driver Loek Hartog, a 23-year-old Dutchman, acted instinctively by stopping his own race car to intervene. Millroy remained trapped and barely conscious for over a minute before Hartog successfully extracted him from the wreckage. Reflecting on the rescue from his hospital bed, Millroy credited Hartog for his flawless response: “He acted instantly and he did everything right.”

Millroy noted that reviewing the footage of the incident feels surreal, likening the precision of Hartog’s rescue to a rehearsed movie scene. Hartog initially checked on the driver, but finding the fire too intense, he grabbed an extinguisher to suppress the flames long enough to enter the car and pull Millroy to safety. “Every single step was perfectly executed,” Millroy remarked, adding that he considers it a miracle to have avoided life-changing burns or death.

The ordeal has forged a profound bond between the two men. Millroy admitted he has no memory of the crash itself, experiencing only a blank period before and for roughly an hour after the impact. The first time he learned the full details of the rescue was when Hartog visited him in the hospital, an encounter that left both men in tears. Millroy, who sustained multiple fractures and a punctured lung, said he is still struggling to reconcile his survival with his memory loss.

Hartog, who competes in Porsche GT series, recalled feeling brief fear as he approached the scene but quickly identified that Millroy could not extract himself. It took approximately 59 seconds from the moment Hartog stopped his car until he successfully pulled the Briton from the blaze. He described his decision-making as a byproduct of his upbringing and racing training, noting, “I don’t know why I went there; why I chose to help. There was no reasoning.”

Millroy’s wife, Fern, has been by his side in China since shortly after the accident, while their three children remain at home. Expressing her gratitude, she described the experience of witnessing such selflessness as overwhelming, stating, “It’s incredible how you can instantly love someone you’ve never met before.” The couple plans to meet with Hartog again this week as he returns to China for a reunion, an event Fern believes will provide necessary closure.

While Millroy intends to resume his racing career, he emphasizes that his current priority is returning home to see his children. “There’s a lot of things I want to go through in my head first,” he explained. He remains deeply grateful for the intervention, stating, “I must have said ‘thank you’ a thousand times and I’d say it another thousand times.”

Both drivers are now calling for a closer look at track safety standards. While an official investigation is pending, Millroy noted that many people are seeking answers regarding the events of that day. Hartog shared this sentiment, asserting that the incident should serve as a catalyst for improving safety within the sport, noting, “I shouldn’t have been the person to help but if it weren’t for me, the outcome could have been very different.”

Millroy expressed admiration for Hartog’s character, praising his family for raising a man who prioritized human life over sporting results. As the pair looks toward future collaboration on safety initiatives, Millroy admits the reality of the incident is only now beginning to set in. “There was a very good chance that wasn’t going to happen if it wasn’t for Loek,” he concluded. The report also notes that the fact I’ve got out without life-changing burns or even the fact I’m alive – it’s a miracle, if you look at the photos and videos of the car. The report also notes that it was as though it was meant to be,” added Millroy. “I’m not religious in any way, but it was as though someone had pre-programmed him to get me out of that car. The report also notes that it’s created this really strong bond between us. The report also notes that i was sort of conscious; I was talking to Loek and I took my helmet off because I had run out of oxygen and I was struggling to breathe. The report also notes that my body had gone into some sort of survival mode because of the amount of the injuries I’d sustained. The report also notes that watching the video is like I’m watching something else. The report also notes that i keep waking up at night where my brain is trying to piece together what happened to my body – that frustration seems to be building more and more.
