Six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek has officially brought her 2026 season to an end after pulling out of the Ningbo Open due to a persistent left thigh injury. The decision eliminates her chances of qualifying for the year-ending WTA Finals, where she needed at least a quarter-final run in Ningbo to overtake Czech player Karolina Muchova for the final tournament spot.

The 25-year-old Polish star revealed that the physical issue had been affecting her performance in recent weeks, including during last week’s Wuhan Open semi-final, where she lost 7-5, 6-1 to fellow countrywoman Maja Chwalinska. “After careful consideration, I’ve decided to withdraw from the tournament,” Swiatek announced in an official statement on the Ningbo Open’s social media channels, explaining that taking time off to rest and recover was the correct course of action.

Swiatek finishes her campaign with a 39-15 match record and a single title, which she claimed at the Canadian Open. It marks her first year without a major title since her victory at Wimbledon last year, having failed to advance past the quarter-finals at any of the four Grand Slams this season. Now ranked ninth in the world, the former world number one previously served a brief suspension in late 2024 following an inadvertent doping violation caused by contaminated melatonin sleep medication.

Reflecting on the year, Swiatek called it one of the most demanding periods of her career, filled with challenges, changes, and valuable lessons. “I’m especially proud of the work we’ve done in the second half of the year and the progress that came with it. It gives me a lot of confidence in what’s ahead,” she shared on social media, noting that the past few years have been exceptionally intense.

Having competed at every WTA Finals event since 2021 and winning the championship title in 2023, Swiatek confirmed she will skip all remaining tournaments this year to focus entirely on her recovery. “The past few months, or actually the past couple of years, have been incredibly intense and I feel I need to rest and recover my body fully. So that’s exactly what I will do, a bit longer this time,” she stated, adding, “As always, I’ll come back with passion and motivation to keep improving…”
