Former Indian pacer Mohit Sharma is returning to the Chennai Super Kings, this time as the team’s bowling coach. The 38-year-old, who previously made 48 IPL appearances for the franchise alongside 10 matches in the now-defunct Champions League T20, is stepping into the role vacated by Eric Simmons. Simmons had served as the bowling coach during the tenure of long-standing head coach Stephen Fleming.
The appointment marks the first addition to newly-appointed head coach Zaheer Khan’s support team. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed the development, noting that Zaheer is currently finalizing his staff and has identified Mohit as the preferred candidate for the bowling coach position. Mohit, who represented India in eight T20Is, retired from all professional cricket in December 2025 following his final IPL season. Mohit, who also played eight T20Is for India, played in the IPL as recently as the 2025 season before announcing his retirement from all forms of the game in December last year. It is learnt that there are three or four names in conversation with a final decision still to be taken.
As the franchise prepares for the 2027 season, management remains focused on filling additional coaching vacancies. The identity of the batting coach has yet to be determined, with several candidates under consideration to succeed Michael Hussey. The internal reshuffle follows a challenging period for the team, which has missed the playoffs for three consecutive years despite winning their fifth IPL title in 2023. These results led to the organization parting ways with Stephen Fleming earlier this year.
