Rapper Macklemore announced on Wednesday that he will donate $1 million—representing his total net earnings from his canceled slot on Ed Sheeran’s tour—to six organizations dedicated to assisting Palestinians. His decision followed a contentious week that saw him removed from the tour due to stadium owner Robert Kraft’s objections regarding the rapper’s past commentary and stage statements, which Kraft characterized as having a history of antisemitic rhetoric. Following Macklemore’s ousting, additional opening acts opted to resign from the tour in protest.

Addressing the conflict, Macklemore stated, “Whatever we disagree about, perhaps we can agree on this: Palestinian lives are worth supporting.” He further noted that he views financial contributions as a minimal but necessary form of solidarity. In his response, Kraft highlighted his long-standing efforts to foster opportunities for Palestinians, stating, “I have dedicated much of my life to building bridges between all people. I believe deeply that all lives are worth protecting.” “Writing a check is one of the least costly forms of solidarity available to me,” Macklemore wrote in his statement.

The controversy prompted further engagement from Ed Sheeran, who according to Kraft, requested a $2 million contribution to address the humanitarian crisis in the region. While Kraft’s official statement did not specify a new donation, he emphasized that he is collaborating with Sheeran and other venue owners to continue building bridges and creating jobs. He noted his decades-long history of facilitating relationships and economic opportunities between young Palestinians and Israelis. According to kraft, He’d heard from Sheeran too, when Sheeran asked him, he said, to commit $2 million “to aid in the region to fight this humanitarian crisis.”.

The humanitarian effort expanded beyond the initial conflict on Thursday when children’s educator Rachel Accurso, widely known as “Ms. Rachel,” pledged to match Macklemore’s $1 million donation. She directed her contribution toward the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund and publicly urged other wealthy celebrities to leverage their platforms and privilege to advocate for human rights and protest the situation in Gaza. Macklemore subsequently expressed his appreciation for her support.

As these figures align on humanitarian goals, the Ed Sheeran tour is scheduled to proceed this weekend with performances in Philadelphia. The ongoing developments reflect a broader conversation among high-profile figures regarding their involvement in international conflicts, with multiple celebrities joining the pledge for financial support to address ongoing humanitarian needs. Some other celebrities have since joined in financial pledges.
