A dominant all-round performance from Ashleigh Gardner guided Australia Women to a 40-run victory over New Zealand Women in the second T20I at North Sydney Oval on Tuesday (October 20). The win gives Australia an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match contest, securing the Rose Bowl in its inaugural edition as a T20I series. The visitors eventually fell 40 runs short.

After opting to field, New Zealand put early pressure on Australia by removing Georgia Voll for a duck, along with cheap dismissals for the returning Phoebe Litchfield—who replaced Tahlia McGrath—and Ellyse Perry. Reeling at 41 for 3 in the seventh over, Australia relied on a rapid 60-run fourth-wicket recovery between Beth Mooney and Gardner, off just 35 deliveries. Mooney contributed 39 off 28 balls to steady the innings before Gardner took full control of the attack. She built a crucial partnership with Mooney before continuing to score freely after the opener’s dismissal.

Gardner reached her half-century off 29 balls before unleashing a heavy late assault. Her defining over came in the 19th, where she punished Jess Kerr for two boundaries and two sixes across four consecutive balls. Although run out on the final ball of the innings, Gardner’s 45-ball 84 featured 10 fours and four sixes, dragging Australia to 167 for 7. For New Zealand, Nensi Patel was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 30.

New Zealand struggled to build momentum in response on a tricky surface, reaching only 56 for 2 at the midway mark as the required run rate mounted. Leg-spinner Georgia Wareham turned the game decisively for the hosts, taking 3 for 18 from her four overs while also claiming two catches and executing a run-out in the field. Amelia Kerr top-scored for the visitors with 32 off 38 balls, but her steady effort could not keep pace with the climbing target. Gardner capped off her star performance with 2 for 17 with the ball as New Zealand were restricted to 127 for 8 in 20 overs. New Zealand’s chase never gathered sufficient momentum.
