Westlife star Mark Feehily is pursuing legal action against a surgeon following a weight-loss procedure that he alleges resulted in a series of life-threatening health complications. The 46-year-old Irish singer has initiated a medical negligence claim in the High Court against Nick Carter, an upper gastro-intestinal and bariatric specialist. According to the Sunday Times, He denies negligence.

The legal dispute centers on a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy Feehily underwent in August 2020. According to the claims filed by his legal team at Leigh Day Solicitors, the surgeon failed to remove an adequate portion of his stomach. This allegedly left behind tissue that triggered a leak, causing persistent abdominal infections and recurring sepsis.

These health struggles led to multiple hospitalizations and culminated in a major operation in 2023, during which Feehily had his entire stomach removed in a procedure known as a total gastrectomy. Suzanne White, a partner at Leigh Day, confirmed the firm is representing the singer in the litigation. While the singer remains grateful for the support of his fans, he is declining further comment to respect the ongoing legal process. “Mark has been dedicated to keeping his fans updated on his health during a period that has been extremely challenging for him, but he has faced it all with his characteristic strength and resilience. “Mark very much appreciates the continued support.

Nick Carter, who has been contacted for comment, has reportedly denied the allegations of negligence. This health journey has significantly impacted Feehily’s career, forcing him to step away from the music industry. After previously withdrawing from concerts in 2022 due to pneumonia, he announced his departure from the group in February 2024 to focus on his recovery.

Westlife, formed in 1998, rose to fame with members Feehily, Shane Filan, Kian Egan, Nicky Byrne, and Brian McFadden. Although the band initially disbanded in 2012, they reunited in 2018 without McFadden, who had departed years earlier in 2004. With over 55 million records sold and 14 UK number-one singles, the group remains a powerhouse in the music industry.

Currently, the remaining trio is marking the 25th anniversary of their debut with a massive world tour. This includes a historic 13-night residency at the 3Arena in Dublin. Following the completion of this residency, the band is scheduled to perform shows across Glasgow, Manchester, London, and Cardiff. Despite his absence from the current touring schedule, Feehily’s legacy with the band remains marked by major hits such as “Flying Without Wings,” “If I Let You Go,” and “You Raise Me Up.”
