Tuchel Admits Manchester City Crisis Distracts England Stars

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has acknowledged that the ongoing investigation into Manchester City’s alleged financial rule breaches is weighing on the minds of the squad members who play for the club. Tuchel noted that the situation has frequently surfaced during team meals, serving as a persistent topic of conversation among players.

Addressing whether the uncertainty has become a distraction, Tuchel admitted it is difficult to ignore. He stated that claiming it is not a distraction would be narrow-minded, noting that players are naturally concerned about the potential future of the club they signed with. While he does not observe the issue negatively impacting their training or interpersonal relationships with teammates, he recognized that it is an unavoidable subject for those receiving constant messages and feedback regarding the legal case. “If I say now it’s not then I can just speak for myself, which would be totally narrow-minded,” Tuchel said. “I think it is a distraction. “It is of course a topic and we speak about it at dinner and at a table of eight or 12 people. I know the Man City players get a lot of messages and phone calls and feedback about it. I think that would be a very human reaction if you don’t know what’s going on for the club that you signed. I don’t see it when I see them in my meetings.

Despite the club’s current turmoil, Tuchel affirmed his willingness to continue selecting Manchester City players regardless of the outcome, including potential relegation. The squad currently includes Elliot Anderson, Marc Guéhi, and Nico O’Reilly, though O’Reilly has been forced to withdraw due to injury. Both Anderson and Guéhi remain in contention for the upcoming Nations League match against Croatia, despite recent challenges in their respective forms. Guéhi made a costly error during last weekend’s defeat by Spain and Anderson was off colour during the win over Czechia last Tuesday but Tuchel believes both are ready to start against Croatia on Saturday night.

As England prepares for the fixture, Tuchel faces tactical decisions, particularly in the defensive line. Jordan Pickford is set to return as the starting goalkeeper, replacing James Trafford. The coach is also weighing whether to bring Jarell Quansah back into the right-back position, or continue with Trent Alexander-Arnold, who delivered an impressive performance against Czechia in Prague.

Reflecting on Alexander-Arnold’s role, Tuchel acknowledged the defender’s unique style, noting that his integration into the team is a work in progress. The manager explained that he is encouraging the Real Madrid defender to step out of his comfort zone and embrace more dynamic movement, particularly to build a stronger connection with Bukayo Saka. According to Tuchel, such chemistry is essential to maximizing Saka’s effectiveness on the pitch.

Tuchel also expressed satisfaction with Saka’s current physical condition, contrasting his recent start to the season with his struggles during the previous campaign. He observed that the Arsenal winger is no longer hampered by the fitness issues that plagued him during the World Cup, allowing him to be more dangerous in offensive play. The England boss believes there is even more potential for Saka to showcase as the team continues its Nations League campaign, where they currently sit second in Group A3 with three points from two matches.

The Football Association has taken a firm stance regarding external commentary on the City situation, moving to block further questions directed at Tuchel about the broader implications for the sport. Meanwhile, Manchester City continues to maintain its innocence, having recently confirmed plans to appeal the ongoing legal verdict.
