Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman have been included in the New Zealand squad for the home ODI series against India. Both batters had been sidelined for the preceding Twenty20 matches due to injury; Ravindra sustained a dislocated shoulder while diving for a catch at a promotional event last month, while Chapman has been recovering from a hamstring issue. Left-hander Ravindra was ruled out of the T20s after dislocating his shoulder when diving to take a catch during a promotional event last month.
Coach Rob Walter has assembled an expansive 21-player group for the five-match ODI series scheduled for November. The rotation policy will see only six players, including captain Mitchell Santner, participate in the entire series. Eight squad members are slated to compete in the first three matches before departing to focus on the subsequent two-Test series against India, at which point seven fresh players will rotate into the lineup for the final two ODIs.
The later additions to the squad feature openers Finn Allen and Tim Seifert along with pace bowler Lockie Ferguson. These three players have primarily focused on professional T20 leagues and have not made a 50-over appearance for their country in the last 18 months.
Walter emphasized that this series serves as a critical window for players to stake their claim for the upcoming World Cup squad. He noted that the team is fortunate to possess the depth required to integrate 21 players throughout the series.
Reflecting on the return of Allen and Seifert, the coach highlighted that their performances in the T20 circuit have been impressive. He added that the upcoming games present an excellent opportunity for them to demonstrate their abilities in the longer format.
