Ella Langley’s country music breakthrough, Choosin’ Texas, has officially become the longest-running number one single in the history of the US charts. The track, which first ascended to the top of the Billboard chart in February, has now maintained that position for 23 consecutive weeks. In doing so, it has overtaken the previous record-holder, Mariah Carey’s perennial holiday hit, All I Want for Christmas Is You.
The song’s dominance is mirrored across the Atlantic; in early September, Choosin’ Texas reached the top spot on the UK singles chart, displacing Sam Fender and Olivia Dean’s Rein Me In. Coincidentally, that track had also achieved a 23-week run at number one, marking it as the longest-reigning chart-topper in UK history. These extended streaks have sparked industry discussions regarding potential stagnation within modern music charts and concerns over whether current streaming models effectively support the discovery of new talent.
The creative origins of the record-breaking hit date back to a 2024 writing retreat, where Langley collaborated with country star Miranda Lambert. The narrative of the song emerged from an anecdote Lambert shared about being pulled over by police while a pet kangaroo and a dog occupied her vehicle. Langley recalled, “She told me the story about how she got pulled over with a kangaroo in the passenger seat and a dog in the back.” When the officer, visibly stunned by the scene, chose not to issue a ticket, Langley remarked that the officer surely recognized the chaos as distinctly Texan. This moment inspired the lyric, “She’s from Texas, I can tell.”
Within 30 minutes, a team including Luke Dick and Joybeth Taylor developed the song’s central theme: a woman in Tennessee who realizes her partner’s heart remains attached to both Texas and another woman. After a live preview in February 2025, Langley identified it as the lead single for her sophomore record, Dandelion. Describing the unexpected trajectory of the song, she told Billboard, “Every day I wake up and it’s doing something that I didn’t even know was a goal I could have had. It’s crazy, it’s nuts.”
This success propelled the 27-year-old Alabama native to a triumphant sweep at the Academy of Country Music Awards in May, where she secured seven trophies. Her wins included female artist of the year, artist songwriter of the year, and both single and song of the year for her record-breaking track. Historically, records for long-running hits were significantly lower; for 23 years, Carey’s collaboration with Boyz II Men, One Sweet Day, held the top spot for 16 weeks. The record was later tied by Despacito in 2017 and surpassed by Old Town Road in 2018, which spent 19 weeks at the peak.
Industry analysts point to streaming as a catalyst for these increasingly lengthy chart stays. Some critics argue that platforms frequently encourage listeners to repeatedly access familiar playlists, creating a bottleneck that complicates the path for emerging artists. A 2022 assessment by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority highlighted this disparity, finding that over 60% of total streams are concentrated on music from the top 0.4% of artists. The report also notes that the bittersweet song details Langley’s suspicions that her boyfriend is about to run off with another woman, released last October. The report also notes that unexpectedly, it started with a discussion about a pet kangaroo Lambert had once owned. The report also notes that saying the cop must have known she was from Texas, given the chaos unfolding in the car, langley responded to Lambert. The report also notes that but I don’t think I could ever have imagined what’s happening with it right now,” the singer told Billboard magazine, we loved that song.
