Manchester City suffered a second consecutive Premier League defeat on Saturday, though manager Enzo Maresca’s side remained in control of much of the play.
The decisive moment arrived in the 11th minute when Yasin Ayari capitalized on a rare opportunity to score the winner. Three months in, it did not occur but his stewardship continues to impress.
The play began from a controversial free-kick awarded against Elliot Anderson for a supposed foul on Ayari, allowing Lewis Dunk to find Diego Gómez.
A missed clearance by Matheus Nunes and a follow-up ball from Maxim De Cuyper set up Ayari for a simple finish past an exposed Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Despite the setback, City displayed moments of their trademark fluidity. Jérémy Doku’s pace caused constant trouble on the flank, and Erling Haaland, Josko Gvardiol, and Enzo Fernández all went close to finding an equalizer. Maresca’s tactics, which he described as “Gio plus 10,” saw Donnarumma start in goal, with tactical adjustments made by introducing Rayan Cherki for Ayyoub Bouaddi in the second half to add creative energy. Ndiaye and Josko Gvardiol were replaced after this by Phil Foden and Allan Elias as Maresca tried to salvage a point or better. City were slick throughout as when Ayyoub Bouaddi’s quick feet found Enzo Fernández and he poked the ball out to the left with a no-look pass that found the menacing Jérémy Doku. His snake-hips along the right creating space for a pinpoint ball that Ndiaye should have headed home not wide, city required a spark so Anderson stepped up. A 50-yard diagonal speared from Anderson to the galloping Doku was another moment of high quality. On 55 minutes Maresca brought on Cherki for Bouaddi and the Frenchman’s contribution was to thread Nunes in – the right-back’s fierce effort was saved. If this thrust and cut recalled Pep Guardiola’s finer City vintages there was an added element of pace that is Maresca’s particular special sauce. Now, had Pascal Gross tipping the ball in and De Cuyper heading, Donnarumma diving right to fend away from goal, this was end-to-end fare that.
Fabian Hürzeler’s Brighton demonstrated impressive defensive resilience, moving up to 19 points—just two behind City in the standings. Their ability to protect the lead against a relentless City attack suggests they are genuine contenders for European qualification. City’s frustrations were compounded by a failure to find the final touch, with several attempts from substitute Nico O’Reilly and Iliman Ndiaye failing to convert into goals. Fabian Hürzeler’s side can be proud of victory here – and of being third. They are worth the lofty position and who would bet against Champions League qualification for them. As in City’s Carabao Cup penalty shootout win over Brighton here on Wednesday the visitors pummelled the hosts – for a period. From the right and near halfway into Brighton’s area, the Senegal international next wowed with a throwback slaloming run which took him. This was if the ascendancy of the opening period continued. Two behind Maresca’s team: expect both to remain high up throughout, city kept pressing but were repelled by Brighton so Hürzeler’s side move to 19 points.
