South Africa secured a 32-run victory over Australia in the second ODI at the Wanderers, clinching the series 2-0 with a match to spare. The triumph was built on a brilliant 156-run partnership between David Miller and captain Temba Bavuma, who steadied the innings after an early collapse. The spinners then shut down a fast Australian start to seal the series 2-0 with a game to spare.

Australia chose to bowl first and immediately applied pressure, with Mitchell Marsh winning the toss on a surface that offered early swing. The hosts faltered early, losing Aiden Markram for a duck, Quinton de Kock, and Matthew Breetzke, finding themselves in trouble at 93/3. Bavuma, who initially struggled to find his timing, broke the momentum by attacking Josh Hazlewood, while Miller arrived to anchor the rescue mission. Wide delivery from Josh Hazlewood towards cover-point, where Cooper Connolly leapt to take a one-handed catch, aiden Markram slapped a short. And just like that, SA found themselves up against it at 93/3. That’s when Miller and Bavuma got together for the mega rescue act.

Miller went on to score a career-best 142 off 93 balls, showcasing power with 12 boundaries and nine sixes, before holing out to deep cover off Jack Edwards. Bavuma contributed a vital 103, his sixth ODI century, before falling to the same fielder. Despite Jack Edwards taking 5/67 with his clever use of cutters, South Africa finished with a commanding 365/9, bolstered by a late 27 from Duan Jansen. Hitting a four and a six off Hazlewood in the third over to break the shackles, bavuma was 1 off 10 balls before deciding that the best way to survive was to attack. Matthew Breetzke added 57 with his captain before Jack Edwards removed him with his third ball of the match.

The Australian chase began aggressively, as Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head dismantled the seamers to reach 130 without loss by the 17th over. However, the dynamics shifted once the pitch dried out. South Africa utilized their spinners for 30 overs—a record for them in a home ODI—to suffocate the middle order. Bjorn Fortuin struck first to remove Marsh for 84, and Aiden Markram later dismissed Head, who also made 84 after surviving two drops.

The collapse accelerated as the ball began to grip, with Keshav Maharaj, Fortuin, and Markram maintaining tight lines. Australia lost consistent wickets, with Alex Carey trapped lbw, Matt Renshaw pinned for 32, and Cameron Green caught after a brief cameo. Xavier Bartlett attempted a late revival with a 26-ball fifty—the joint-fastest against South Africa—but his efforts were eventually neutralized by a precise yorker from Lizaad Williams and effective death bowling from Marco Jansen, who claimed two wickets in two balls. And Hazlewood and Xavier Bartlett kept beating the bat, the new ball swung more than it had in Durban.

The tourists were ultimately dismissed for 333 in 49.5 overs. Lizaad Williams was the pick of the bowlers with 3/54, effectively stifling Australia’s lower order. The win marks a significant turnaround for the hosts, who overcame a difficult start to dominate the game through controlled spin and explosive batting.
