A South Korean street musician performing in London’s Trafalgar Square last Friday found himself sharing the stage with an unexpected collaborator: Coldplay singer Chris Martin. The performer, Ahn Ji-hoon, who operates under the name HannyJunee, was wrapping up his set when the crowd requested the band’s hit song, “Viva la Vida.”

As the music began, a man in a hat and sunglasses approached. Ahn initially assumed he was just another enthusiast. “I thought, ‘Oh, this guy knows how to enjoy the vibe. Nice. Must be a massive Coldplay fan,’” Ahn recalled. Even as they began to sing, the busker remained skeptical of the stranger’s identity. While he noted the performer possessed an uncanny vocal resemblance to Martin, he admitted, “Did I think it was actually Chris Martin? Absolutely not.” “We’ve had cool participants before, so I just rolled with it,” added the artist.

The interaction, which Ahn described as feeling “like a movie,” concluded just as abruptly as it began. “He coolly walked away right after the song ended, and then the crowd swarmed me, shouting, ‘Do you know who that was?’” After learning the man’s true identity, Ahn expressed his profound gratitude on social media. He posted a video of the encounter to Instagram, captioning it, “Still can‘t believe this happened. Thank you Chris for the most unforgettable moment of my life.”

Describing the energy of the encounter, Ahn noted that Martin seemed to be having a genuine, joyous time. The singer, he observed, was smiling brightly throughout the performance. Reflecting on the serendipity of the moment, Ahn remarked on the improbability of the encounter, stating that it felt like an event reserved for fiction. He added that he remains deeply appreciative of how the viral moment has helped him connect with people globally.

This surprise performance is part of a pattern of spontaneous appearances by the Coldplay frontman. Last year, Martin famously surprised a couple by attending their wedding in person to perform for their first dance after receiving a request for a simple video message. Additionally, earlier this year, patrons at a pub in West Yorkshire were stunned when the musician showed up to perform an impromptu set.

During the West Yorkshire visit, attendee Andy Varley recalled the singer’s humble approach, noting that Martin was seen personally unloading pianos and engaging warmly with customers. “Chris was really chatty and really engaged,” Varley observed, highlighting how the star even displayed a drawing given to him by a customer’s child on his instrument.
